چکیده

The last ten years a number of observational advances have substantially increased our knowledge of shock phenomena in supernova remnants. This progress has mainly been made possible by the recent improvements in X-ray and γ-ray instrumentation. It has become clear that some shell-type supernova remnants, e.g. SN 1006, have X-ray emission dominated by synchrotron radiation, proving that electrons are accelerated up to 100 TeV. This is still an order of magnitude below 3 × 1015 eV, at which energy the ion cosmic ray spectrum at earth shows a spectral break. So one of the major goals is to prove that supernova remnants are capable of accelerating ions at least up that energy. Here I review the evidence that ions and electrons are accelerated up to energies ∼ 100 TeV in supernova remnants, and, in addition, the recent progress that has been made in understanding the physics of collisionless shock fronts and the magnetic fields inside supernova remnants.

On the plasma temperature in supernova remnants with cosmic-ray modified shocks

Context. Multiwavelength observations of supernova remnants can be explained within the framework of the diffusive shock acceleration theory, which allows effective conversion of the explosion energy into cosmic rays. Although the models of nonlinear shocks describe reasonably well the nonthermal component of emission, certain issues, including the heating of the thermal plasma and the related ...

Spectra of Magnetic Fluctuations and Relativistic Particles Produced by a Nonresonant Wave Instability in Supernova Remnant Shocks

We model strong forward shocks in young supernova remnants with efficient particle acceleration where a nonresonant instability driven by the cosmic ray current amplifies magnetic turbulence in the shock precursor. Particle injection, magnetic field amplification (MFA) and the nonlinear feedback of particles and fields on the bulk flow are derived consistently. The shock structure depends criti...

Shocks and particle acceleration in SNRs: theoretical aspects

Energetic particles are an essential component in supernova remnants (SNRs). Non-thermal particle acceleration in supernova shocks is expected to be an efficient process at different evolutional stages of SNRs. Non-linear wave–particle interactions being the governing process of the SNR collisionless shock formation are responsible for both shock heating and compression of the thermal gas as we...

Supernova remnants in molecular clouds: on cosmic ray electron spectra

The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999) for such SNRs can naturally lead to th...

Absence of Electron Surfing Acceleration in a Two-Dimensional Simulation

Electron acceleration in high Mach number perpendicular shocks is investigated through two-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. We simulate the shock foot region by modeling particles that consist of three components such as incident protons and electrons and reflected protons in the initial state which satisfies the Buneman instability condition. In contrast to previous...
